Overcoming Anxiety

Overcoming anxiety is possible!

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is often described as having multiple tabs open on a computer as you piece together all of the possible catastrophic outcomes of every event and every decision you make. It may look like constantly researching and getting people’s opinions as you desperately try to find the correct course to take. And when you decide, you do not trust your decision.

Anxiety feels overwhelming: an increase in heart rate, pressure on your chest, a lump your throat, twisting in the stomach, a head heavy of fears, insomnia, or a crawling of your skin where you feel unstable and unable to function “normally” around others. It can often make you react in ways you wish you hadn’t. Maybe it causes certain behaviors, like decision paralysis or emotional explosions. It does not have to be like this!

What kinds of therapy help anxiety?

There are a lot of different types of therapy that help you manage anxiety symptoms like CBT, ACT, and Exposure Therapy. With these types of therapy, you are taught coping skills to help manage anxious symptoms. Counseling can help you reframe negative thoughts or stop negative thought spirals. At Abiding Waters Counseling, we take an integrative approach that does not focus on one type of therapy, but utilizes the specific therapeutic interventions that work for you.

What does therapy for anxiety look like?

At Abiding Waters Counseling, we first begin with a detailed intake that assess your childhood, your current symptoms, your goals, your beliefs, and your current life. From there, together, we create a treatment plan that works for you and is in your comfort zone. Often the treatment plan starts with giving you skills to manage your day to day anxious symptoms. We also provide you will skills on how to evaluate your fears. After you feel more stable, we begin to look for the root cause of your anxiety. The goal is to no longer have to manage anxiety.

EMDR Therapy for Anxiety

Can EMDR therapy help anxiety? YES! There are multiple studies that prove that EMDR can be effective in improving anxious symptoms. With the EMDR protocol, we look at your life and identify the negative beliefs that drive your anxiety. We then look for the disturbing event or experience where these began. This becomes our target for EMDR therapy.

The goal of EMDR therapy is to allow your brain to process the disturbing event or experience so that your symptoms dissipate! No two individuals are alike; therefore, we are unable to guarantee that all of your anxiety will disappear, but Abiding Waters Counseling truly believes that together we can find a more satisfactory life in which you are able to confidently move forward and are no longer held back by anxiety.
